United Nations: Nearly 90 million displaced people face severe climate risks
Ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP31) in Turkey, a report by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) stated that approximately 90 million refugees and other forcibly displaced persons face grave risks linked to global warming.
Assistant High Commissioner for Operations at the UNHCR, Antón Leis García, said in a statement: "Refugees face a double injustice; having been forced to flee conflicts they did not cause, they now find themselves on the front lines of a climate crisis to which they have contributed very little."
The UN organization noted that "people forced to flee due to conflict, violence, and persecution often end up in places plagued by severe droughts, deadly floods, and extreme heat."
The UNHCR further observed that "climate change is increasingly threatening the prospects for finding durable solutions for displaced people." It stated that more than two-thirds of the refugees who returned to their home countries during the first half of this year found themselves in areas highly vulnerable to climate risks. /End
