Baghdad /NINA/- UN Secretary-General António Guterres affirmed that Iraq today is a different country, one of security and safety.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, he said that Iraq is a land of civilization and history.
He added, "Iraq is a land of civilization, history, and humanity, and we have witnessed its courage, steadfastness, and determination in deveating terrorism, foreign interference, and sectarianism." He noted that "we appreciate Iraq's commitment to repatriating its citizens from al-Hol camp."
Guterres congratulated Iraq on "the successful holding of the recent elections," expressing his hope that "the Iraqi government will rebuild trust and stability in the country."
He explained that "UNAMI in Iraq helped in reconstruction after decades of war, and our goal was to support Iraq in its efforts to restore stability." He pointed out that "with the closure of the mission, vital development and human resources agencies will remain, and we stand with Iraq to build a prosperous and stable country." /End
