Baghdad (NINA) – Independent lawmaker, Safiya al-Sihail, called for adopting the mechanism used by the former Iraq Governing Council, to form the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) under the UN supervision because Iraq's political process in not mature yet.
In a statement to NINA on Saturday, Aug. 11, Sihail said that the absence of trust and continued crisis the country is going through makes us call to adopt the mechanism in forming the IHEC used in the first election, adopted during the Interim Governing Council, in choosing members of the IHEC according to the qualifications and integrity.
She added that influential ruling parties impose an increase in the number of the IHEC to put their supporters in the Commission, which frustrated the efforts by the Parliamentary committee charged to form a new Commission.
Parliament voted last Monday to extend the works of present IHEC for extra 30 days, because no agreement has been reached on choosing members of the new Commission. / End.
