BAGHDAD / NINA / the U.S. embassy in Iraq considered the visit of the Head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General / Martin Dempsey / to Baghdad, where he met a number of officials, as to support the development in Iraq as a strategic partner and a leader in the region.
US embassy in Iraq said in a statement today that " Gen. Dempsey's visit is a part of efforts by the United States within the strategic framework agreement to support the continuity of the development in Iraq as a strategic partner contributes in the peace and security as a leader in the region.
The statement added that Dempsey discussed ,during his meeting with Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and other Iraqi officials, the regional and security issues, including the situation in Syria.
It is mentioned that Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki confirmed ,during his meeting yesterday with Gen. Dempsey "the need to accelerate the arming of the Iraqi security forces, to secure Iraq's sovereignty over the entire land , waters and airspaces.
Al-Maliki said in a statement quoted him as saying that "the strategic framework agreement identifies all these tracks and we follow up and implement what was agreed upon, whether in the field of military cooperation and armaments or in other areas."
Maliki added "the building of Iraq's capabilities and equip its forces with modern equipment , contribute in the stability of the region."
Maliki pointed out that "Iraq, since the outbreak of the Syrian crisis, was keen on the need to move away from interference in internal affairs and work to promote a peaceful political solution."/End
