UN welcomes moving residents of Ashraf camp to Hurriya camp

Baghdad (NINA) – The UN welcomed the announcement that residents of Ashraf camp will start their preparations for the second convoy to be moved to Hurriya camp.

In a statement on Saturday, Aug. 18, to the press, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq, Martin Kobler, said that he welcomes the announcement that the second batch of Ashraf camp residents, consisting of 400 persons, will start be moved, just after Fitr Eid, toward Hurriya camp.

Kobler called on the Iraqi government to deal generously with regards to the humanitarian needs of the camp's residents, and renewed his urge to member states to accept resettling the camp's residents in their territories.

The statement pointed out that the UN continues its support to a peaceful solution to the issue of Ashraf camp, and is closely watching the process of moving them, as well as having throughout the week and around the clock watch the Hurriya camp. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is exerting its utmost in looking into the camp's residents single requests seeking to find permanent solutions to them.

The statement called on the remaining residents of Ashraf camp to be prepared for movement to finalize peacefully their movement to Hurriya camp. / End.
