Baghdad (NINA) – The Special Representative for Iraq and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), Martin Kobler, expressed concern over the delay in choosing members to the new Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC)
In a statement to the press on Sunday, Aug. 5, Kobler said that any delay in choosing new Commissioners will constitute serious threat to Iraq's democracy. He stressed that it is necessary for all policy makers to work hand in hand to quickly finalize choosing the members of IHEC Commission; which will pave the way to carrying out the election of provincial councils, scheduled for March of 2013for the benefit of the Iraqi people.
Kobler renewed his call on concerned parties to guarantee women's participation in the new IHEC Commission.
Parliament has decided to postpone until Monday the voting on members of the new IHEC.
Parliament is witnessing disagreement on choosing the IHEC members and their number, which prompted postponing the vote. / End.
